But Honestly...

I try not to follow too many celebrities on social media because, well for one, I don't personally know them and two, I'm not fond of many. However, Jessica Alba is one that despite her stunning physical appearance, has managed to stay very humble and out of tabloid drama. I respect that. I'm super glad I picked up her recently published book, The Honest Life, which acts as a guide for those wanting to live a life free of toxic chemicals in personal care products, pesticides and GMO's in their food and focus's on how to keep your baby/ies safe from all of it.

I've literally just begun reading it and already couldn't wait to share a blog post about it.

She also recently co-founded The Honest Company which has developed products (think cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, personal care, and baby care) all natural and honestly free of harsh chemicals and also eco-friendly. She stresses how so many companies who boast a lot of claims about being eco-friendly are in fact "greenwashing" - making it seem like their products are more eco-friendly than they actually are. In other words, "lying". It's so disturbing that even with the consequences of false advertising, there are still so many companies that get away with bullshit. Well, fool me once, shame on me, fool me a lot of times shame on me again for not looking into the products I use in the place I live and the clothes I {& baby Jude} wear.

Start asking questions folks! About everything. Jessica's book is a great place to start because she's done so much research on her own. Eat organic, stay away from plastic, stop using products with chemicals and toxins that have never been tested on human health {ie. many diaper brands!}. The Honest Company keeps living honestly super cute and stylish too, something VERY important to me!

What's even better is that everything is budget-friendly. Unfortunately they don't ship to Canada yet, but you can bet I'm getting a whack load of stuff shipped to my in-laws who live in the States. The things I'll do to get my hands on some pretty {& safe} diapers - I mean skull and crossbones? Yes please!

Grab your copy of The Honest Life here.

Happy 2 Months Jude!

Our little Jude is chunking up quickly!
He's a hefty 11lbs 9oz right now which is almost double his birth weight - what a guy!

What we've learned this month:

Loves tummy time
Likes to see what's going on by looking over your shoulder when held
Likes when other kids talk and play with him
Is happiest in the morning after a good feed and clean diaper
Loves being outside
He's getting really close to giggling
Can have an attitude {obviously gets this from me}

Can't stop kissing that face!

Jude's Nursery

Yipee! Jude's nursery is finally complete. Super excited to share these photos - I am very happy with the final product! The last piece to complete was the ginormous "Hey Jude" painting above his crib. My husband and I started the painting a few weeks before Jude was due to arrive but since he decided to show up early, it got put on the back burner. The lettering my husband did by using his trusty ruler, compass and wicked math skills. We are so happy with it. I also made the fabric garland hanging along the crib for my baby shower (you can see pics here) and the paint-chip mobile was made from the paint-chip garland I also made for my shower. I love that those pretty pieces of decor didn't go to waste.

Some other favourites of mine are the skateboard decks hanging above his shelf - I hunted down the Andy Warhol one on Ebay and got it for a great price. The other one was made by Jude's Uncle Tom, as a gift for my husband at Christmas. Since my husband skateboards, I definitely wanted to incorporate as much as possible without making it a "skateboard" themed nursery. The rocking chair is vintage, given to me by my Grandma who had purchased it when she was pregnant with her first baby - my Aunt. My Mom used is for me and my brother and it has been passed through our family for years. It was originally just wood so we decided to paint it the same mint colour we used for our painting.

Lots of things were pretty cost efficient! The shelf, dresser and curtains for the closet are from Ikea - I spruced up the dresser with knobs I found on sale from Anthropology. My husband made the change table tray using this tutorial from Lay Baby Lay. The globe I found at Good Will and also painted the base mint to match. The lamp, toy bin, window curtains and rod, and the "Happy is Big Enough to Share" print are all great finds from Homesense. And last but not least, the hilarious 'chihuahua on a skateboard' pillow cover is from Society 6 - just the perfect touch to the rocking chair!

Our Newborn Session

Ok, so I know that 80% of my posts on this blog thus far have been pretty baby heavy but I promise to mix it up as soon as I've shared all the joy that is bursting at my seams. I wanted to share this phenomenal infant photographer I found. Jennifer Blakeley is one talented mama. She's located in Niagara Falls and exlusively photographs newborns within the first 10 days of life. Jude was just 6 days old when he made his modelling debut and it was amazing to watch Jennifer move and position him so delicately. Our little guy managed to stay sound asleep for the duration of our shoot making Jennifer's job a little easier.

Check out Jude's photos on Jennifer's website.

I highly recommend her for anyone interested in newborn photography! They don't stay this small for long and I wanted to soak up every second of it.

We're so glad we have these beautiful pictures to look back on.

Thanks Jennifer!

Hey Jude

As I'm sure most of you already know, our little Jude arrived 2 weeks ago! Very much to our surprise - he was 5 days early and made his entrance early in the morning on April 12th. My water broke around 6:10pm on Thursday evening and despite still going grocery shopping (hey, we needed food!) my contractions really picked up by 7:30pm, leaving me wondering "...uh this is just the BEGINNING?!" The plan was to labor at home as long as possible and then make our way to the hospital to deliver. I decided to go the midwife route with my pregnancy and I could not have made a better choice. My midwives arrived to my Mom's around 8:30pm to check me and after agreeing that yes, my contractions were consistent, they weren't long enough and I wasn't even in "active labour" yet. All that kept running through my mind was "um, excuse me?" They left to grab some dinner while I tried the bath tub to ease the pain. I lasted about half an hour before I looked at my husband and said, "I'm not going to be able to do this naturally."

My wonderful doula arrived somewhere around 10pm to help support me through these magnificent contractions (more like have her hand crushed by mine every 3 minutes). I tried lying on my side, on all fours, standing leaning on my husband, swaying, walking, dancing, toning - nothing was easing the gripping pain that was my sweet little child being pushed down and out. By the time my midwives got back, I think it was around 10:30pm (all time was lost to me at this point) they checked me and I was officially in "active labour" - 3 cm dilated and only 7 more to go! At this point, the only thing I could think about was getting rid of the pain. This meant getting to a hospital ASAP. So, without another thought about it, my shoes were on and I was having a contraction on my Mother's front porch in the middle of a storm. The ride to the hospital is a complete blur as I had left this world and gone straight to "labor land". My poor husband was doing his best to drive safely and get us there as fast as he could.

Arriving at the emergency entrance felt like a huge accomplishment. I waddled my way up to the maternity floor and all I could say to the nurse was, "Tell me about the epidural." Little did I know, I was hours away from receiving this miracle pain-reliever and proceeded to labor in the bathroom of my hospital room. My midwife suggested I try the laughing gas to try to take the edge off of the contractions and I remember huffing that stuff like it was my life line. It didn't do enough. Aside from feeling slightly stoned at the end of a contraction, they were too close together and too strong to be dulled by the gas. She checked me again and I was 5 cm dilated - still not close enough for me to forfeit getting the epidural even though my intentions was to go all natural. Finally, at 2:30am, the anesthesiologist arrived. I was sitting upright on the bed, leaning into one of my midwives and he kept saying I had to stay still while he was giving me the epidural. I was super nervous about this task because I had spent the last hour or so thrusting and contorting my body in every which way to try to escape, well, myself. Somehow, my contractions cooperated and I didn't have one for 4 full minutes - WOW! He was able to do it swiftly and painlessly.

Twenty minutes later - I was a different human being. It felt like I had opened my eyes for the first time in days. Everyone was able to rest for a couple of hours, although I definitely couldn't sleep. Being hooked up to so many different instruments was a first for me and my midwife kept switching me from side to side to make sure the epidural was evenly dispersed. She checked me at 4:30am and said his head was right there. I dilated 5 cm in 2 hours! I was getting really nervous about the pushing part - I was anticipating more pain but thankfully the epidural was still going strong and although I could feel my legs, everything else was pretty numb. My midwife taught me the position for pushing and had me do a practice push. A few minutes later my mom and doula returned from their rest in the hospital lounge and it was show time. I had a mirror so I could see what was going on (I only watched part of it) and 3 contractions later, they placed my slippery wet little boy on my tummy. He was finally here.

It was the most intense experience of my life and I wouldn't change a thing about it. For any pregnant ladies out there (or for those thinking about getting pregnant) midwives are the way to go. They are by your side every step of the way, caring for you and your baby before and after baby arrives. I felt like I walked into the hospital with this powerful team of women (and my husband, of course) that were there to make sure my labor and delivery was full of nothing but love and support.

Thank you to my doula, Jannine Markou (highly recommend!) and to my midwives, April, Ann and Stephanie from Burlington Area Midwives.

And without further ado...

The Nursery Inspiration

Decorating the nursery has been one of the most fun experiences of life. I could lie awake in bed for hours just putting pieces together in my head (I've done this a few times until I literally force myself to go to sleep). I've been collecting inspiration from various sources (mainly blogs) for months and months and I wanted to share a few. I knew I wanted mint to be the main colour used regardless if it was a boy or a girl. I wanted it to be modern with an eclectic edge with pieces that are personal to my husband and I. I'm a huge fan of quotes and inspiring messages so I also wanted to add little philosophies around his room - principles I hope he lives by.

The room is nearly complete and I can't wait to share photos. For now, I thought I would share what got my creative juices flowing in the first place. Some of my favourite blogs that I used to search for inspiration are:

The Nursery of ViVi Charles

The Nursery of Baby G

The Nursery of Lennon

My Maternity Shoot

I'm super excited to share the little photo shoot I did with Katie Harrison of Low Key Studio (located in Hamilton). She did such an amazing job capturing this beautiful time in my life! We both wanted to create something very candid, natural and of course, nothing too cliche. We lucked out with special Canadian spring weather that day which made shooting outside A LOT more fun. We shot the majority of the photos in our bedroom and I could not be happier with the results.
If you're looking for a photographer for any occasion, I highly recommend this lovely lady.

T-Minus 8 days-ish until little man arrives!

{Thank you Katie for these beautiful memories!}
